Evolutionary dynamics from a variational principle.
We demonstrate with a thought experiment that fitness-based population dynamical approaches to evolution are not able to make quantitative, falsifiable predictions about the long-term behavior of some evolutionary systems. A key characteristic of evolutionary systems is the ongoing endogenous production of new species. These novel entities change the conditions for already existing species. Eve...
متن کامل$(varphi_1, varphi_2)$-variational principle
In this paper we prove that if $X $ is a Banach space, then for every lower semi-continuous bounded below function $f, $ there exists a $left(varphi_1, varphi_2right)$-convex function $g, $ with arbitrarily small norm, such that $f + g $ attains its strong minimum on $X. $ This result extends some of the well-known varitional principles as that of Ekeland [On the variational principle, J. Ma...
متن کاملOnsager's Variational Principle in Soft Matter Dynamics
In soft matter, many equations have been proposed to describe the complex behavior of the system in non-equilibrium state. Examples are (i) the phase separation kinetics (model H) : the coupled equations for the component diffusion and the fluid flow, (ii) the gel dynamics: the coupled equation for the permeation of solvent and the deformation of gel, (iii) nemato-hydrodynamics: the equations d...
متن کاملSymbolic Dynamics and the Discrete Variational Principle
We show how to construct symbolic dynamics for the class of 2d-dimensional twist mappings generated by piecewise strictly convex/concave generating functions. The method is constructive and gives an eecient way to nd all periodic orbits of these high dimensional symplectic mappings. It is illustrated with the cardioid and the stadium billiard.
متن کاملVariational principle for magnetisation dynamics in a temperature gradient
By applying a variational principle on a magnetic system within the framework of extended irreversible thermodynamics, we find that the presence of a temperature gradient in a ferromagnet leads to a generalisation of the Landau-Lifshitz equation with an additional magnetic induction field proportional to the temperature gradient. This field modulates the damping of the magnetic excitation. It c...
